“The 3 sisters” is an ancient Native American crop that was domesticated over 5000 years ago.
In the book Braiding Sweetgrass by Robin Wall Kimmerer I learnt about the similarity between how this plants grow and how sisters grow in a family.
From a permaculture point of view, these 3 plants grow very well together:
• the corn grows tall to give a structural support to the beans
• the beans nourish the soil with nitrogen
• the squash protects the soil from the excess of sun & unwanted weeds
Corn = 1° sister
Bean = 2° sister
Squash = 3° sister
… They behave like in families, right?!
It was an eye-opening consideration to me! Watch the video to understand it better!
